Birthday Party at The Playground & GIVEAWAY!!

The Playground Birthday Party l mum-bo-jumbo.comI hadn’t planned on having a big birthday party for my son’s second birthday but with six cousins and five adult relatives coming to see him on his special day, I had to come up with something fast. With the Australian summer heat upon us, it was a no brainer that indoors was essential.

Having a modest home with limited space, the thought of having over a dozen people “partying” at my house only days before Christmas sent shivers up my spine.  Frankly, I couldn’t think of anything worse. (Sorry family, I do love you, but, well,  you know….)

I had been to a few of the local indoor play centres with my son previously and he absolutely loved them! With that, my mind was made up and I contacted The Playground Rockingham in Western Australia to book a birthday party. Although there are numerous other play centres in the local area, I chose this venue because of the number of improvements I had seen recently by new owner Megan.

Before the Birthday Party

After I booked the party over the telephone, Megan promptly emailed me the details of the various party packages available. I liaised with her via email on the most part (simply because every time I am on the phone, my son has a meltdown. What is with that??)

Anyway, Megan made things so easy for me and took care of absolutely everything. What a saint! Megan provided me with advice on the platters I ordered and accommodated my (numerous) requests without hesitation. This is a far cry from the “do it myself” party my son had for his first birthday. What a nightmare that was. A valuable lesson learnt there – never again am I doing that, I’ll gladly leave it to the experts.

The Day of the Birthday Party

Arriving at The Playground Rockingham about half an hour before my son’s scheduled party, this allowed some time for him to play with his cousins. The older cousins had an absolute blast climbing through the sky high tunnels, jumping on the huge bouncy castle, playing arcade games and swinging on the flying foxes that are located in a couple of different spots.

The younger ones spent most of their time in the toddler area which has been specially designed for children up to the age of four. The designated toddler area has loads of ride on toys, a couple of small slides, a toddler sized bouncy castle, a cute little cubby house and my son’s absolute favourite – the ball pit! Once he gets in there, the only way to get him out is to cleverly distract him or bribe him with food!

Party Time!

When it came time for the birthday party, one of the staff members announced over the loud speaker that it was time for the party goers to head to the Superheroes room for the party. Donned with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman among others, the room was set up with children sized tables and chairs. Each child had their place set and the platters I had ordered were all ready to go.

The host (forgive me, I have forgotten her name but I know she is a Nanny!!) was absolutely brilliant. Unlike my terrible memory, she remembered all the children’s names within minutes and really made the effort to get down to their level. To top it off, she played a great host by sharing the platters around the adults, topped up drinks as needed and really got the party going with some music playing in the background.

After the kids ate their meals, they headed out of the party room to play some more before we had the cake. After around 15 minutes or so, using the loud speaker, she invited everyone back into room for the best part of all – the birthday cake!

Although The Playground Rockingham do allow you to bring along your own birthday cake to pre-booked parties, out of convenience I chose to purchase one of the ice cream cakes they have on hand. They also have candles available however I bought along my own special number 2 candle with the intention of using it for a craft I had in mind. It wasn’t until days later that I remembered I didn’t grab it at the end of the birthday party! Never mind. That was my own silly season fault.

After the Party

Full of food and sugary goodness, the kids had the time of their life with unlimited play. The adults sat at tables in the cafe area, picking at the platters while keeping a watchful eye on the children as they burnt off all that extra energy.

After an hour or two, some of the younger ones were getting a little grumpy, including the birthday boy, so it was time for us to go.

This was the best birthday party ever for both my son and I. He had unlimited play time with his best friends. There was plenty of food and drink. I didn’t have to cook or prepare anything. There was no cleaning involved nor did I have to spend my time organising games for the kids. We had an awesome host, and again, I didn’t have to clean! What more could a parent ask for?

A big thanks to Megan and the staff at The Playground Rockingham, for making my son’s 2nd birthday party an absolute hit with the entire family!

My daughters best party was when she was 2 yrs old in our back yard, a couple of her friends from play group came & we used the new BBQ I had bought for Christmas , there was lots of yummy food & the kids played with the balloons & streamers & in her little cubby house . It was very cute <3

  4. We always have our parties at home…firstly cos we have a winter baby and secondly because its expensive to go elsewhere. We’d like to try somewhere like the playground now my lil man is old enough to enjoy it though for something different. He will be 5 next year. Thanks so much for this!

  7. For my daughters 3rd birthday we invited her friends and their favorite teddy companions to city park for a teddy bears picnic. We had teddy themed food and games and then the sky opened up and it poured down. The kids had a ball splashing in all the puddles, was a great day.
