Christmas Shopping Tips

Make a List and Stick to your Budget

If you want to things to run as smoothly as possible at Christmas time, then follow this advice. No further commentary is required.

Buying up at the Sales – is it such a good thing?

Some people prefer to pick up bits and pieces for Christmas over the course of the year when they are on sale. The difficulty with this, although you may be saving some money on the purchase initially, by shopping this way, it is very easy to purchase additional gifts for the same person later on. Unless you are really organised, just watch when you shop at sales or you could inadvertently go over budget.

The items I do suggest purchasing on sale are Christmas decorations, tree, cards, wrapping paper, serviettes etc. These items are normally over priced in the lead up but once Christmas is over, some products are reduced by up to 75%!

Buying Online

Buying online certainly has it’s benefits. It can save busy parents time and help stop impulse buying (or not…) but purchasing products online doesn’t always mean you will save money.

Firstly, make sure you are purchasing from a reputable company. Secondly, before you commit to any purchase, take the time to read the company’s fine print about insurance, shipping costs, warranty and the estimated delivery time.  Taking a few minutes to do this could prevent unnecessary stress down the track.

Lay By or Lay Away

I will often put on lay bys at the mid year toy sales. These are normally for the countless nieces and nephews, as well as my own son (my step daughter is a little too old for toys now).

In theory, this worked great for spreading the cost over a number of months leading up to Christmas.  The difficulty I had was, “out of sight, out of mind”. Doubt started to cross my mind. Did I buy each child enough? Did I miss anyone? How much did I spend on each child?

All this doubt caused me to shop for more presents. Totally unnecessary and lesson learnt. Be organised and lay by will work well for you.

Handmade Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas may be the time of giving but you don’t always have to give a present that has been purchased. Many Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles love homemade gifts, particularly if they are from children. The sentimental value with homemade gifts far outweigh a purchased gift any day. After all, it is the thought that counts.

 Food Gifts

I love the idea by Jennifer over at Nanna’s Wisdom to make homemade Christmas hampers filled with goodies such as shortbread, green tomato pickles, Christmas cake and pickled onions. The recipes shared by Jennifer are so simple and not expensive to make. They’d make a great gift for neighbours, teachers, friends or even family.

I believe Jennifer has a few more recipes coming out in the next few weeks so I suggest keeping an eye on her blog for more great ideas!

Repurpose

There are plenty of ideas out there for repurposed gifts but I particularly love the idea of turning an old photo frame into a mirror. I think this one from Dream a Little Bigger would make a great gift for an Aunt or even a teenaged girl!
