I had so much fun making this egg carton caterpillar. It was quick, easy and made using items I already had in the house. I love that my son is getting to the age of enjoying the crafts I make for him from recycled bits and pieces. He may be a little too young to make them entirely himself, but there is nothing stopping him from enjoying the end product.
To make an egg carton caterpillar you will need:
- An egg carton
- Poster paint (in whatever colour you want)
- Pipe cleaners
- Strong craft glue
- Googly eyes
- Old newspaper
- Black marker
Lay down some old newspaper on your work space to avoid any paint or glue spillages on your table
Cut the base of the egg carton away from the lid then trimmed the tops off the peaks found on the inside of the carton. Don’t throw the trimmed pieces away as you use these later on
Cut the egg carton base in half, length ways
Paint the body of the egg carton caterpillar. I used green and red to resemble the Very Hungry Caterpillar
Collecting two of the tips cut from the peaks found inside the egg carton, paint these. I painted them in yellow
While waiting for everything to dry, cut three pipe cleaners in half to make six pieces. Five of these will become legs, while the sixth piece is cut in half again to use for the antennae
Once the body is dry, pierce five holes down either side of the body of the egg carton caterpillar, making sure the holes lined up on both sides. Feed a pipe cleaner through both of the aligned holes and shape the pipe cleaners into legs
Once dry, pierce a hole in the top of each of the trimmed peak and feed through some pipe cleaner in each
Using strong craft glue, glue a googly eye to each of the painted peaks. Wait for the glue to dry
Pierce two holes at the top of the head of the egg carton caterpillar. Sit the googly eye peaks on top and feed through each piece of pipe cleaner under the head to secure each piece to the body of the egg carton caterpillar
Shape the pipe cleaner at the top into the antennae. Twist together the pipe cleaner inside the head of the egg carton caterpillar to secure the eyes properly
Use a black marker to draw a mouth onto the face of your egg carton caterpillar
Your egg carton caterpillar is now complete!
You can personalise your egg carton caterpillar however you like. Use your child’s favourite colours. Glue on embellishments to make a fancy dress caterpillar. Or you can keep it simple as I have – the choice is yours!
