Tips for Using Eucalyptus Oil in the Home & GIVEAWAY!

Tips-for-Using-Eucalyptus-Oil-in-the-HomeNative to Australia, eucalyptus oil is extracted from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree.

Although it’s now found all over the world, the Australian indigenous people have used eucalyptus oil for thousands of years for it’s many properties including an antiseptic, antiviral, anti fungal and as an expectorant; just to name a few.
Eucalyptus oil is one of the most used products around my home. It’s extremely versatile and has many uses from cleaning to reducing the symptoms of a head cold.

Readily available at pharmacies and supermarkets, eucalyptus oil is a natural and an affordable product that I recommend all households keep on hand.

After using a number of brands, I personally recommend using Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil products.

Being a long term eucalyptus oil user (see my tips below), I only recently tried Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil spray for the first time.

This product is a great alternative to antiseptic aerosol sprays. The entire family was recently sick so I used the eucalyptus oil spray on pillows, the toilet, the bathroom and even the couch!

Be warned: you only need a very small spray. A little spray goes a really long way.

If you spray too much, it can be a little over powering. However when it’s used in moderation, the eucalyptus spray leaves a clean and refreshing smell while killing off yucky germs!

Tips for Using Eucalyptus Oil in the Home:

In the Kitchen

  • Dab eucalyptus oil onto a cloth and disinfect your kitchen naturally. Wipe down the sink, taps and benches
  • Add one cap full of eucalyptus oil to a bucket of hot water to clean the kitchen bin

In the Bathroom/Toilet

  • Add a cap full or two of eucalyptus oil to the toilet bowl, scrub and flush. Eucalyptus oil is safe for drains and will leave your toilet clean with a fresh smell
  • Dab a reasonable amount of eucalyptus oil onto a cloth. Wipe over the tiles in your bathroom before scrubbing them with a brush. When finished, rinse off the eucalyptus oil residue with water

For the Pets

  • Wash your dog’s bedding in a hot wash. Add two cap fulls of eucalyptus oil to the load. The blankets will smell fresh and the eucalyptus oil will help deter fleas and mites
  • When you wash your dog, add a cap full of eucalyptus oil to the water to deter fleas and mites, particularly in summer

In the Laundry

  • Add a cap full of eucalyptus oil to the washing machine when you put on a load of laundry. Great for cloth nappies (diapers), greasy, stained or smelly clothing
  • Use eucalyptus oil to make your own wool wash mix. Click here for the recipe I use

When you are Sick

  • If you have a head cold, fill a sink or basin with hot water. Add half a cap full of eucalyptus oil to the hot water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam to clear congestion. Not recommended for young children
  • Use diluted eucalyptus oil in vapourisers. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions
  • Use eucalyptus oil spray to kills off germs around the house. Use this sparingly as you only need a small amount.

Minor First Aid

  • Use eucalyptus oil as an antiseptic for cuts and abrasions. Dab a cotton wool ball with eucalyptus oil and gently dab the affected area
  • Rub diluted eucalyptus oil onto sore or aching muscles caused from sporting injuries

IMPORTANT HEALTH DISCLAIMER: As with all essential oils, if you are pregnant or suffer from a chronic illness, please discuss the use of eucalyptus oil with your health practitioner before taking on any of the tips in this post
